The WineBarn have had a very busy couple of days hosting tasting events in Oxford, Cambridge and Winchester. Iris, our MD, was joined by two of our top winemakers - Markus Mleinek of Weingut Dr Heger, (left) and Uli Allendorf of Weingut Allendorf (right) - who were on hand to give a unique insight into their regions' climates & soils, grape varieties, cellar techniques and more.
We hosted our Annual Portfolio Tastings at Wadham College in Oxford on Tuesday and St Catharine’s College in Cambridge on Wednesday, both of which had an excellent turn out. This is the 19th year we have hosted these events, so we relished the opportunity to see familiar faces again, as well as welcome newcomers. Guests were treated to an informative and informal tasting journey through some of Germany’s most sophisticated new and mature wines. There were over 30 wines available to try, including a variety of sparkling Sekts, elegant Spätburgunders (Pinot Noir), vintage Rieslings and noble Dessert wines. One of the Oxford wine stewards remarked that it was, “…an immensely enjoyable and educational experience.” And Blind Wine Tasting tweeted, “Such an inspired tasting of German wines with Iris Ellmann of The WineBarn.”
The real show-stopper though, was our Fusion Tasting Dinner in collaboration with Kyoto Kitchen in Winchester. Japanese cuisine met German wine during this intimate tasting evening. Flavours from two very different cultures fused, and guests had the opportunity to learn about the art of food & wine pairing.
The evening kicked off with a sparkling aperitif, followed by five delicious courses paired with five premium wines. The hosts talked guests through the ingredients and techniques used to create these dishes, and explained how they selected wines that truly complimented them. A full house, a cracking time was had by all that attended this popular tasting dinner.
