Riesling from these areas are legendary, and as full of life as ever. Some 1,700 years of uninterrupted viticulture have created a unique bond between its natural and cultural landscapes. The area’s 9,000ha (22,300 acres) of vines lie between the hilly Eifel highlands in the north and the Hunsruck Hills in the south. The sites on steep slaty hills, in particular, bring forth very special Rieslings that number among the finest in the world. As the rivers snaked their way through the valley, they left behind a series of slopes so steep that they can only be worked by hand. The warmth of the heat reflecting slate is mirrored in the wines: mineral rich and earthy, yet highly elegant, with refined, complex aromas. They are wines of nearly infinite longevity.
