This red wine paradise lies south of Cologne.
The steep slate vineyards of the Ahr number among the most northerly of Germany. Some 86% of its c. 560 ha (1,400 acres) of vines are red. The quality and grandeur of these reds, particularly Spätburgunder and the specialty Frühburgunder, merit their international standing. Riesling and other varietals also thrive here.
Nearly all the vines are precariously perched on rugged crevices on extremely steep slopes that can only be tended by hand; a few solitary parcels require mountain climbing skills to be reached. The Burgundian climate of the Cologne lowland heats up the barren slate soils during the day; they gently release the warmth at night. The resulting wines are just as spectacular as the view from the vineyard heights into the valley.
